  • WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, June 27, 2013, The Hay-Adams Author Series will welcome John Taliaferro, former Newsweek senior editor and Harvard graduate, to discuss his latest book, All the Great Prizes: The Life of John Hay, from Lincoln to Roosevelt, while dining with guests at The Top of the Hay, the Hotel’s elegant rooftop spaces overlooking the White House.

In All the Great Prizes, published by Simon & Schuster, Taliaferro chronicles the life of John Hay, who at age 22 served as secretary to Abraham Lincoln and later as Secretary of State for William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. All the Great Prizes is the first full-scale biography since 1934 on Hay, who was a major figure in American history for more than half a century. Hay, a polished diplomat who knew every president and world leader, helped Roosevelt win the Nobel Peace Prize. Hay was a close friend of Henry Adams and shared his love for the same married woman, Lizzie Cameron, the Madame X of Washington Society.

This Author Series selection is especially fitting for The Hay-Adams, the iconic Washington, DC hotel named for the two prominent men in history, John Hay and Henry Adams, whose houses once sat at the site of the Hotel. The Author Series was created in 2005 by Kay Enokido, former president of The Hay-Adams, to recognize the country’s greatest writers and to bring back a tradition started by Hay and Adams who often held literary discussions at their homes.

Hans Bruland, Vice President and General Manager of The Hay-Adams, will host the event along with Marie Arana, former editor in chief of Book World at The Washington Post. Tickets for the event, held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., are $85 and include a three-course meal, wine, tax and gratuity. The book will also be available to purchase.  For tickets and more information, visit www.hayadams.com and click on Author Series or call 202.220.4844.
