WASHINGTON, DC – August 9, 2022 – The Hay-Adams Author Series’ tradition of giving literary-minded guests and locals access to some of the most distinguished authors of our time continues next month, when Geraldine Brooks presents her latest work, “Horse: A Novel,” during an intimate lunch event.

Building on the literary salons hosted in the late 1800s by the hotel’s forebearers – John Hay and Henry Adams – the Author Series events feed curiosity and appreciation of the literary arts through lively presentations and conversation, while also indulging the palate with fine food and drink.

On September 2, 2022, Geraldine Brooks will discuss “Horse: A Novel” during a themed three-course lunch with wine. Guests will also have an opportunity for a book signing, and DC-based bookstore  Politics and Prose will be on hand to ensure guests can purchase a copy as the book will have just hit shelves before the event.

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, Geraldine Brooks braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history in “Horse: A Novel.”

“The September event is for anyone who appreciates not only the finest caliber of writing, but also the opportunity to venture more deeply into a novel that explores one of the great American sports and several of its adjacent spheres of influence,” said Nicolas Béliard, Managing Director, The Hay-Adams.

Geraldine Brooks grew up in Sydney, Australia. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 2006 for her second novel, “March.” Her novels “Caleb’s Crossing” and “People of the Book” were New York Times bestsellers. Brooks worked as a reporter for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Wall Street Journal, where she covered crises in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. Her first novel, “Year of Wonders,” is an international bestseller, translated into more than 25 languages and currently under option to the actor Olivia Coleman. Brooks’ latest work, “Horse: A Novel,” is featured at the 2022 National Book Festival.

The Hay-Adams Author Series event featuring Geraldine Brooks will take place at 12:00 pm on Friday, September 2, 2022, at Top of the Hay, the venue that offers panoramic views of DC and a direct view of The White House. Tickets are $110 per person.

About The Hay-Adams Author Series

The Hay-Adams Author Series recreates a grand literary tradition established by John Hay and Henry Adams in the late 1800s. At the time, their homes were the center of Washington's intellectual and social gatherings, featuring literary giants such as Mark Twain, Edith Wharton and Henry James.

John Hay served as a personal secretary to Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and Secretary of State under both William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Henry Adams—the grandson and great-grandson of U.S. Presidents—was a historian and professor at Harvard.  Both men were also accomplished writers who had worked as journalists, authored presidential biographies, and published novels.

In 2005, The Hay-Adams Author Series was launched by Kay Enokido, President of The Hay-Adams, to renew the spirit of literary discourse that had once occurred on the very land where our historic hotel stands today, in the center of downtown Washington, DC.
