Washington, D.C. - July 20, 2023 - The Hay-Adams, one of Washington, D.C.'s most iconic luxury hotels, is presenting its next Author Series event, a captivating literary lunch featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author Beverly Gage and her latest book, G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century.

On Friday, August 11, 2023 – aligning with the Library of Congress 2023 National Book Festival – Gage will present highlights from her book during a themed three-course lunch with wine at Top of the Hay at The Hay-Adams with panoramic views of the White House and the Washington Monument as a backdrop. Building on the literary salons hosted in the late 1800s by the hotel’s forebearers – John Hay and Henry Adams – the Author Series events feed curiosity and appreciation of the literary arts through lively presentations and conversation, while also indulging the palate with fine food and drink.

Gage’s book portrays Hoover as a colossus who dominated half a century of American history and sparked much of today’s conservative political landscape. In 1924, when Hoover became FBI director, buzzing with energy, he transformed a failing, scandal-riddled law-enforcement backwater into a modern machine. G-Man uses Hoover's story to explain the trajectories of governance, policing, race, ideology, political culture, and federal power as they evolved over the 20th century.
